Frederic de Forest Allen (1844–1897) was an American classical scholar.
Frederick Forest Allen was born in 1844 inOberlin, Ohio. He graduated atOberlin College in 1863.[1]
Allen taught Greek and Latin at theUniversity of Tennessee from 1866 to 1868.[1] He attended theUniversity of Leipzig in Germany from 1868 to 1870, where his thesis supervisor wasGeorg Curtius.[1] He earned hisPh.D. there with his thesisDe Dialecto Locrensium.[2]
Allen was Professor of Foreign Languages at theUniversity of Cincinnati, and atYale College. He held the chair of classical philology atHarvard for the last seventeen years of his life.[3]
He died in 1897 inCambridge, Massachusetts.[3]
