Frederick John Silvester (20 September 1933 – 5 July 2025) was a BritishConservative Party politician.
The son of William Thomas Silvester and Kathleen Gertrude (née Jones), Silvester was born inHackney, London on 20 September 1933.[1][2] He was educated atSir George Monoux Grammar School,Walthamstow, andSidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where he achieved a first class in Part I of the historytripos and a lower second in Part II of the law tripos, graduating in 1954.[3][4][5] He was called to thebar atGray's Inn in 1957, and became a Conservative member ofWalthamstow Borough Council four years later.[5] Having contested theWalthamstow West parliamentary constituency in 1966, Silvester was elected aMember of Parliament (MP) at theWalthamstow West by-election in 1967,[1] but lost the seat at the1970 general election.[6] He was returned toParliament at theFebruary 1974 general election as MP forManchester Withington,[7] and held that seat[8] but he was defeated at the1987 general election byLabour'sKeith Bradley.[9]
As an OppositionWhip duringHarold Wilson's second government (1974–76),[5] Silvester is a major character inJames Graham's playThis House.[citation needed]
Silvester died on 5 July 2025, at the age of 91.[10][2]
SILVESTER Frederick John died peacefully on 5th July 2025, aged 91. Much-loved husband of Victoria, father of Jessica and Lucy, and grandfather of James, Charlotte, Thomas and Katie. Private family cremation. Thanksgiving service at Southwark Cathedral, London Bridge, London SE1 9DA, on Thursday 28th August at noon.
