Franz Rogowski (German:[ˈfʁantsʁoˈɡɔfski]; born 2 February 1986) is a German actor. He has appeared in films directed byMichael Haneke,Christian Petzold,Andrea Arnold, andTerrence Malick.

Life and career

Franz Rogowski was born in 1986 inFreiburg im Breisgau,West Germany.[1] The son of a pediatrician and a midwife, he grew up in a bourgeois environment inTübingen. His maternal grandfather is formerBDI PresidentMichael Rogowski. Franz worked as a bike courier and bookstore assistant, attended a Swiss clown school, and trained in dance.[2]

Since 2007, he has been active in the independent theater scene, appearing as a dancer, choreographer, and actor on various stages such as theThalia Theater Hamburg, theSchauspielhaus Hannover, and theSchaubühne am Lehniner Platz.

Rogowski has acleft lip that was surgically closed, resulting in a slight lisp.[2] He was discovered as a film actor by Berlin directorJakob Lass, who cast him inFrontalwatte (2011) and the award-winningLove Steaks (2013).

The actor gained international attention with the filmVictoria (2015), one of the few feature films shot in asingle continuous take. The German thriller won theSilver Bear forOutstanding Artistic Contribution for Cinematography as well as sixGerman Film Award categories.[3] That same year, Rogowski became a permanent member of theMünchner Kammerspiele ensemble.[4]

In 2017, he played the son ofIsabelle Huppert's character inMichael Haneke'sHappy End, which premiered at theCannes Film Festival. He also starred inTransit byChristian Petzold andIn den Gängen byThomas Stuber, both of which were presented in the main competition at theBerlin International Film Festival. Rogowski was named a German "Shooting Star" in 2018 and won theGerman Film Award for Best Actor forIn den Gängen.

Rogowski gained further international recognition withTransit, which earned him a nomination for theFlorida Film Critics Circle Award.Transit appeared onBarack Obama's list of favorite films of 2019.[5]

In 2020, he collaborated again with Christian Petzold onUndine alongsidePaula Beer. In 2021, Rogowski earned aEuropean Film Award nomination for his performance inGreat Freedom.[6] The following year, he received aDavid di Donatello nomination for his role in the Italian filmFreaks Out.

In 2023, his lead role inLubo earned a spot in the competition at theVenice Film Festival. He also starred inIra Sachs' dramaPassages, winning theNew York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor and earning anIndependent Spirit Award nomination.[7]

Films featuring Rogowski have been screened at theBerlin International Film Festival,Cannes Film Festival, andVenice Film Festival. He currently resides in Berlin.
