TheFranz-Josefs-Bahn (lit.'Emperor Franz Joseph railway line') is a standard gauge railway line in the Austrian state ofLower Austria. It runs 163.1 kilometres (101.3 mi) fromVienna, the Austrian capital, to the border with theCzech Republic atGmünd. The line was originally built by theEmperor Franz Joseph Railway and is today owned and operated by Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB).

Route

The southern terminus of the line is atWien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, in theAlsergrund district ofVienna. From there, the line follows the west bank of theDonaukanal toWien Heiligenstadt and a junction with theSuburban line and theDonauuferbahn. From there, the line follows theDanube river, finally crossing it atTulln an der Donau. At Tulln, it has a junction with theTullnerfeld railway line [de]. From Tulln, the line runs west-northwest towardsGmünd on theCzech border. At Gmünd, the line crosses theLužnice river and continues toČeské Velenice, where it splits into theČeské Velenice–České Budějovice railway line [de] andČeské Velenice–Praha railway line [de].

Operations

The Franz-Josefs-Bahn hosts primarilyVienna S-Bahn and regional traffic. The S40 operates at hourly intervals between Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof andSt. Polten, leaving the Franz-Josefs-Bahn atTulln.[2] Regional trains operate every hour toEggenburg and every two hours toČeské Velenice.[3] Direct service between Vienna andPrague over the route, defunct since 1992, resumed in December 2022 as theSilva Nortica (lit.'Northern Forest').[4]Regional-Express trains operate hourly toKrems an der Donau, crossing the Danube at Tulln and leaving the Franz-Josefs-Bahn atAbsdorf-Hipperdorf.[5]
