Francine Dee Blau (born August 29, 1946, inNew York City)[2] is an Americaneconomist and professor of economics as well as Industrial and Labor Relations atCornell University. In 2010, Blau was the first woman to receive theIZA Prize in Labor Economics for her "seminal contributions to the economic analysis of labor market inequality."[3] She was awarded the 2017Jacob Mincer Award by the Society of Labor Economists in recognition of lifetime of contributions to the field of labor economics.[4]

Personal life and education

Blau was born to parents Harold Raymond Blau and Sylvia Blau, née Goldberg, in New York City. Her parents divorced when she was six years old. She and her brother lived with their mother until Sylvia Blau became ill. After that, the children went to live with their father. Harold Blau supported Francine's wish to become an economist.[2]

Blau graduated fromForest Hills High School inQueens in 1963, after which she enteredCornell University and received herB.S. inindustrial and labor relations in 1966. She received herM.A. ineconomics fromHarvard University in 1969 and herPh.D. in economics from the same university in 1975.[2]

Blau is married toLawrence M. Kahn, also an economics professor atCornell University.[5] Together they have two children.[2]

Career

Blau is currently theFrances Perkins Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations and Professor of Economics atCornell University.[5][6] Before coming to Cornell in 1994, she was an assistant, associate, and professor ofEconomics andLabor and Industrial Relations at theUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she joined the faculty in 1975. Prior to that, she was a research associate atOhio State University and a visiting lecturer atYale University.[7]

Blau is a research associate at theNational Bureau of Economic Research,[8] a research fellow at theInstitute for the Study of Labor (IZA),[9] and a research fellow at theCenter for Economic Studies.[10] She is a fellow of the Society of Labor Economists, theAmerican Academy of Political and Social Science, and theLabor and Employment Relations Association.[11] She is also a fellow at the Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality (Stanford University) and a research fellow at the Compensation Research Initiative (Cornell University).[11]

She has served as vice president of theAmerican Economic Association, president of the Society of Labor Economists,[5] theLabor and Employment Relations Association, and the Midwest Economics Association.[7] She is an Associate Editor ofLabour Economics and was formerly an editor of theJournal of Labor Economics and an Associate Editor of theJournal of Economic Perspectives.[11] She serves or has served on numerous Editorial Boards, including theAmerican Economic Review, theJournal of Labor Economics, theJournal of Economic Perspectives, theILR Review, theJournal of Labor Research, andThe Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, among others.[11][12]
