Military star ranking is military terminology, used in mainlyEnglish speaking countries, to describegeneral andflag officers. WithinNATO's armed forces, the stars are equal toOF-6–10.[1]

One-star

A one-star rank is usually the lowest rankinggeneral orflag officer.[2] In manyCommonwealth countries, the one-star army rank ofBrigadier is considered the highestfield officer rank.[3]

Two-star

A two-star rank is usually the second lowest rankinggeneral orflag officer.[4]

Three-star

A three-star rank is usually the third highestgeneral orflag officer.[5]

Four-star

A four-star rank is usually the highest or second highest rankinggeneral orflag officer.[6]

Five-star

A five-star rank is usually the highest rankinggeneral orflag officer.[7] This rank is usually afield marshal,general of the army,admiral of the fleet ormarshal of the air force.

Proposed six-star

In theUnited States Armed Forces, asix-star rank is a proposed rank immediately superior to afive-star rank, possibly to be worn by theGeneral of the Armies orAdmiral of the Navy. This proposal has not been officially recognized by the military or Congress.
