Fornes dialects

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fornes (second syllable stressed) is the dialect native toForni di Sopra andForni di Sotto, two villages which, from AD 1300 to AD 1700, were governed separately from the surrounding areas by theSavorgnani family ofVenice and known as 'I Forni Savorgnani'.[1]

As the two villages are 9 km (over 5 miles) from each other and there was traditionally poor communication in the snowy months of the year, these villages' dialects diverged and are still markedly different both from each other and from the language spoken further down the mountains (Friulian).[original research?]According to studies by some institutions which studyLadin languages these two dialects moved away from Friulian to become 'Raetic-Dolomitic-Ladin' similar to Ladin languages spoken inGrisons,Switzerland, while keeping Friulian characteristics.[citation needed].

To give one example, the wordsheep (plural) translates aslas minas in Forni di Sopra, lis fedis in Forni di Sotto, andlis pioris in Friuli. For comparison, the Italian isle pecore.[original research?]

  1. ^Venetian is either grouped with the rest of the Italo-Dalmatian or the Gallo-Italic languages, depending on the linguist, but the major consensus among linguists is that in the dialectal landscape of northern Italy, Veneto dialects are clearly distinguished from Gallo-Italic dialects.
