Aforest steppe is a temperate-climateecotone andhabitat type composed ofgrassland interspersed with areas ofwoodland orforest.
Forest steppe primarily occurs in abelt of forest steppes across northernEurasia from the eastern lowlands ofEurope to easternSiberia innortheast Asia. It forms transition ecoregions between thetemperate grasslands andtemperate broadleaf and mixed forestsbiomes. Much of Russia belongs to the forest steppe zone, stretches fromCentral Russia, acrossVolga,Ural,Siberian andFar East Russia.[1][2][3][4]
In upper North America another example of the forest steppe ecotone is theaspen parkland in the centralPrairie Provinces, northeasternBritish Columbia,North Dakota, andMinnesota. It is the transition ecoregion from theGreat Plainsprairie andsteppe temperate grasslands in the south to theTaiga biome forests in the north.
In central Asia the forest steppe ecotone is found in ecoregions in the mountains of theIranian Plateau, inIran,Afghanistan, andBalochistan.
