[We didn't make it to the finals, and the third-place game against East Germany was scheduled for ten in the morning. Coach Ponomarev said, "I don't feel like butting heads with them. How about we play to a draw." A draw would have meant bronze medals for both teams. Using my German, learned at the institute, I approached the East Germany team doctor before the game. "How do you feel about both of us getting medals?" "Yes," I said, and went to the coach. He turned to me and gave me a thumbs-up: the issue was decided. We scored twice each, but Dynamo's Andrei Yakubik came out for the second half, unsuspectingly burst into the penalty area and almost made the score 3:2. Thank God he missed, otherwise the Germans would have destroyed us.]
