Florea Dumitrache (22 May 1948 – 26 April 2007) was a Romanian professionalfootballer who played as astriker.

Dumitrache spent most of his senior career atDinamo București, appearing in over 200league matches and winning three national titles and onenational cup. Internationally, he earned 31caps for theRomania national team and scored 15 goals.

He was considered one of the best forwards in Europe during his time, and was well known for his technique and aerial ability.

Italian clubJuventus wanted to sign Dumitrache after his performance at the1970 World Cup butNicolae Ceaușescu's communist regime refused.[2]

Club career

Dumitrache was born on 22 May 1948 inBucharest, Romania, having been nicknamed since his childhood "Mopsul"(The pug), because his nose resembled that of apug.[3][4][5][6] He started playing junior-level football in 1961 atRapid București.[3][5] Two years later he went to TUG Bucureșt, where he was seen byDinamo București's coachTraian Ionescu who convinced him to come and play for his team.[4][7] He made hisDivizia A debut on 2 May 1966, playing for Dinamo București under coachAngelo Niculescu in a 1–1 draw againstDinamo Pitești.[3][8] His first trophy won was the1967–68 Cupa României, scoring a goal in the 3–1 victory in thefinal against Rapid in which coachBazil Marian used him the entire match.[3][9] In the following three editions of theCupa României, the team would reach the final in all of them, Dumitrache scoring a goal in each of the first two, but they were all lost torivalsSteaua București.[10] Over the years he would score five more goals in the derby against Steaua in five league victories.[11]

Dumitrache won three league titles withThe Red Dogs in 1971, 1973 and 1975.[3][4][7][12] In the first one he contributed with 15 goals scored in the 28 matches he was used by coachesNicolae Dumitru and Ionescu.[3][12] In the second he played 26 games and scored 15 goals under the guidance ofIon Nunweiller and in the third he made 10 appearances with four goals netted while working once again with Dumitru.[3][4][7][13] During his time at Dinamo, Dumitrache also played 16 games and scored six goals in European competitions.[3] Notably, he netted once in a 11–0 win overCrusaders in the1973–74 European Cup and helped the team earn a 1–0 home win overReal Madrid in the1975–76 European Cup.[3][14] He became the Divizia A top-scorer twice, first in 1969 with 22 goals and the second in 1971, alongsideConstantin Moldoveanu andGheorghe Tătaru with 15 goals.[3][4][7][15] Dumitrache won two times (1968, 1969) theRomanian Footballer of the Year award, and in 1970, he was nominated for theBallon d'Or along with Dinamo teammateCornel Dinu.[3][4][7][16][17] Italian clubJuventus wanted to sign the 24-year-old Dumitrache after his performance in the1970 World Cup, making an estimated$1.5 million offer for him, butNicolae Ceaușescu'scommunist regime refused.[2][4][7]

After spending 11 seasons at Dinamo, Dumitrache went to play forJiul Petroșani where for three seasons he made a successful partnership in the team's offence withGheorghe Mulțescu.[3][18] He netted 20 goals in his first season, being the league's second top-scorer, only behind former teammate, Dinamo'sDudu Georgescu who won theEuropean Golden Shoe.[3][15][18][19] In 1979 he went toDivizia B club,Corvinul Hunedoara where his former Dinamo teammate,Mircea Lucescu was coaching, scoring 15 goals in hisfirst season which helped the club earn promotion to the first league.[3][18] In the1981–82 Divizia A season, the team finished third.[3] Subsequently, Dumitrache played all four games in Corvinul's1982–83 UEFA Cup campaign, scoring once as they got pastGrazer AK in the first round, being eliminated in the following one byFK Sarajevo against whom he also netted a goal.[3][20] During the second leg against Sarajevo, an incident occurred where he headbutted referee Gianfranco Menegali in the mouth and as a consequence,UEFA handed him the maximum seven year suspension from all its competitions.[7][21] Dumitrache made his last Divizia A appearance on 17 September 1983 in Corvinul's 2–0 home loss to his former team, Jiul Petroșani, having a total of 357 matches with 170 goals scored in the competition.[3][4][7] He ended his career in 1984 after playing forMinerul Știința Vulcan.[22]

International career

Dumitrache played 31 games and scored 15 goals forRomania, making his debut under coachAngelo Niculescu in a 0–0 friendly draw against theNetherlands.[23] He played five games in which he scored three goals in the successful1970 World Cup qualifiers.[23][24] He performed well in thefinal tournament, being used by coach Niculescu in all three group stage games, scoring twice, once in a 2–1 win overCzechoslovakia and once in a 3–2 loss toBrazil.[2][23][24] Dumitrache also impressed with hisdribbling abilities, especially in the 1–0 loss toEngland in front of defendersBobby Moore andTerry Cooper.[4][5][7][23][24] However, Romania did not manage to advance to the next stage.[24] He played three matches and scored two goals in theEuro 1972 qualifiers.[23] Then he scored five goals in five games during the1974 World Cup qualifiers, including two in Romania's biggest ever victory, a 9–0 win againstFinland.[23][25] Dumitrache also played in a 3–1 win overGreece in the1973–76 Balkan Cup, making his last appearance for the national team on 23 July 1974 in a 4–1 friendly victory againstJapan in which he scored two goals.[23]

In 2022, theInternational Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) included Dumitrache in its "Romania's all-time dream team" first XI.[26]

Personal life and death

Sports commentator Ilie Dobre wrote a book about him titledI se spune "Mopsul" - Florea Dumitrache(They call him "Pug" - Florea Dumitrache), which was released in 2001.[27]

Dumitrache died in his native Bucharest on 26 April 2007, aged 59, due to adigestive hemorrhage.[5][28] After his death, the Victoria Ground was renamed "Stadionul Florea Dumitrache" in his honor.[29]
