Fishing Boats Entering Calais Harbour is an 1803landscape painting by the BritishartistJ.M.W. Turner.[1][2] Duringstormy weather,fishing boats return to the port ofCalais. Turner had visited the town in 1802 during thePeace of Amiens before the outbreak of theNapoleonic Wars. As well as this picture he also created the largerCalais Pier, now in theNational Gallery inLondon.[3] Turner produced a laterprint inspired by the paintingEntrance of Calais Harbour, which he included in hisLiber Studiorum.[4]
Today the painting is in theFrick Collection inNew York City, having been one of five Turners acquired byHenry Clay Frick between 1901 and 1914.[5][6]
