TheFire and Rescue Department (FRD),[a] also known asBrunei Fire and Rescue Department (BFRD),[2][b] is a government agency ofBrunei Darussalam, responsible forfirefighting, animal rescue, andtechnical rescue. The department's main headquarters are located inBandar Seri Begawan.
It is the primary and mainpublic service firefighting force in Brunei, though there are other firefighting units run by other government agencies. Furthermore, there are additional private firefighting entities, such as the BSP Fire and Emergency Response service operated byBrunei Shell Petroleum (BSP), which ownfire stations (along with firefighting vehicles and emergencyambulances) located atAnduki Airfield andPanaga,Belait District.[3] Moreover, they also owned a singleSikorsky S-92 forsearch and rescue (SaR) operations.[4][5]
995 is theemergency telephone number used to contact the Fire and Rescue service in Brunei.
The Fire Service (Malay:Perkhidmatan Bomba) was originally formed under the Administration of theRoyal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) in order to preservepeace and stability.[6] On 1 January 1960; 65 years ago (1960-01-01), the Fire Brigade (Malay:Pasukan Bomba) was officially fully established independent from the RBPF.[6] After the formation, 36 police officers, including anInspector were either permanently or temporarily transferred to the newly establishedbrigade; Inspector Mohammad became the first Superintendent of Fire Brigade.[6] Despite being independent form the RBPF, the Fire Act 1966 was still kept, until the Amendment of the Fire Services Act 2002 came into force.[6]
The Fire Supply (Malay:Pasokan Bomba)[7] was formed in mid-1963; 62 years ago (1963), in which Lam Soo Man, an officer loaned from theHong Kong Fire Service was selected to be theFire Inspector (Malay:Pemeriksa Bomba) of the Brunei State Fire Brigade (Malay:Bomba Negeri Brunei) until 1969.[6] On 4 August 1966; 59 years ago (1966-08-04), the Fire Services Enactment was passed and put into service.[6] In 1968, theGovernment of Brunei commenced a project to build a fire station inTutong, on theriver bank of theTutong river.[8] Since the establishment of the Fire Supply, officers have been loaned from Hong Kong and United Kingdom until 1980.[6] The first local commander Dato Paduka Awang Haji Yaakob bin haji Mohd Yussof, was entrusted in 1981.[6]
On 9 November 1987; 38 years ago (1987-11-09), the department was renamed from Fire Supply (Pasokan Bomba) to Fire Services Department (Malay:Jabatan Perkhidmatan Bombadan) and again on 9 March 2006; 19 years ago (2006-03-09), in which it became its present name.[6] More thanB$1.3 million cost in damage caused by fires was recorded by the FRD during the first quarter of 2007.[9] In 2010; 15 years ago (2010), theSungai Liang Industrial Park (SPARK) fire station,Sungai Liang was designed and constructed in a collaboration with the FRD.[10] A 4.5metres (15feet) longcrocodile was captured by the Brunei Fire and Rescue Department near a shop inKampong Salar, and later transferred to the Wildlife Division.[11]
