Fiona Alison Steele,CBE, FBA is a Britishstatistician. Since 2013, she has been Professor of Statistics at theLondon School of Economics (LSE).

After graduating with a degree in mathematics and statistics from theUniversity of Edinburgh in 1992, Steele completed her master's degree (in 1993) anddoctorate in statistics (in 1996) at theUniversity of Southampton. She then joined the LSE as alecturer in statistics and research methodology. She was appointed to a research lectureship at theInstitute of Education in 2001. In 2005 moved to theUniversity of Bristol to be areader in social statistics; she was promoted toprofessor three years later. Steele was also Director of Bristol's Centre forMultilevel Modelling from 2010 until she took up her post at the LSE in 2013.[1][2][3] According to herBritish Academy profile, her research relates to the "development and application of statistical methods for the analysis oflongitudinal data, including multilevelevent history models andsimultaneous equation models" and their "applications indemography and education".[3]

Honours

[edit]

In 2008, Steele was awarded theRoyal Statistical Society'sGuy Medal in Bronze.[2] The following year she was elected aFellow of the British Academy (FBA), the United Kingdom'snational academy for the humanities and social sciences.[3] She was appointedOfficer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the2011 New Year Honours for services to social science[4] andCommander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the2022 Birthday Honours for services to statistics in the social sciences.[5]
