The building is located on theEmbarcadero in theSoMa District, at the foot ofMission Street.[1][2] Designed byA. A. The upper story is decorated with two terracotta shields and with patterned brick panels.[3]

In 1925 it ceased to be a post office and was used for transportation company offices; in 1933 it was transferred to the stateAgriculture Department.[3][4] It wasAmtrak's San Francisco terminal, withbuses connecting to trains atOakland andEmeryville,[2] until March 2015, when this moved to the Temporary TransBay Terminal pending completion of theTransbay Transit Center.[5]
