A member of theHouse of Habsburg, his paternal grandparents wereOtto von Habsburg, the lastcrown prince ofAustria-Hungary, andPrincess Regina of Saxe-Meiningen. His maternal grandparents areBaron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza andFiona Campbell-Walter, descendant of theCampbell baronets of Airds – his cousin,Jamie Campbell-Walter, is also a racing driver and doubles as Habsburg's manager.[4]
Habsburg was baptised on 20 September 1997 inZagreb by CardinalFranjo Kuharić. His godparents were his uncleGeorg von Habsburg;Alois-Konstantin, 9th Prince of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg;Queen Margarita of Bulgaria; andAgnes Husslein (born Countess Agnes vonArco).[5] He was also given the traditional Croatian nameZvonimir.

He is the brother ofEleonore von Habsburg and Gloria von Habsburg. His brother-in-law (Eleanore's husband) is former driverJérôme d'Ambrosio.[6]
Ferdinand is theheir apparent to the headship of theHouse of Habsburg-Lorraine, held by his father on 1 January 2007.[7] His titles and honorifics are unofficial as Austria is arepublic with all royal titles being legally abolished in 1918.
Habsburg began his racing career at the age of 14 with the Austrian team Speedworld Academy.[8] He has worn racing number 62 since the beginning of his karting career. In 2014 after four years spent in ROTAX Junior category, winning multiple championship titles, he switched to Rotax DD2. He also qualified three times for theRotax Max Challenge Grand Finals, scoring a best result of eleventh in 2013.
In 2014, Habsburg made his début in single seaters, taking part in the Formula Renault 1.6 NEC Championship withLechner Racing. He finished fourth with a 100% finishing rate in 15 races.
For 2015, Habsburg contested New Zealand'sToyota Racing Series in January and February 2015 with Victory Motor Racing, finishing 11th in the championship and 5th in the rookie class with two podium finishes. He would return to the series with Giles Motorsport for 2016 and finished fourth in the championship behindLando Norris,Jehan Daruvala andBrendon Leitch with four podium finishes, which included his first win in car racing in the season opener atMike Pero Motorsport Park.
Habsburg contested his final season in the series in2017, this time driving forM2 Competition. The Austrian finished the campaign in eighth place, scoring two podiums.
For 2015, Habsburg decided to switch to theFormula Renault Northern European Cup withFortec Motorsports.[9] Having only raced in the first five rounds in the series with a best finish of fifth at his home event at theRed Bull Ring, the Austrian ended up 19th in the standings.
Habsburg made his debut in theEuroformula Open Championship in the 2015 season finale at theCircuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where he finished both races in the top ten.[10]
Thefollowing year Habsburg committed to the series full-time, racing forDrivex School.[11] Having lost ground to the more experienced title-favouriteLeonardo Pulcini during the first few rounds, Habsburg was able to achieve his first race win in the series at theCircuit Paul Ricard. He followed that up by scoring seven podiums across the five remaining rounds, which included a win inBarcelona, and finished second in the standings, with twelve podiums from just 16 races to his credit.
For 2017, Habsburg stepped up to the FIA European F3 Championship, racing forCarlin. He had a highly successful season, taking four podiums and a first series win at Spa. However his most impressive drive came in the end of yearMacau Grand Prix. In the main race, he battled hard for the lead with BrazilianSérgio Sette Câmara, but was unable to pass. On the final lap, Habsburg took the lead around the outside of the final corner at Fisherman's Bend, but braked too late and understeered into the barriers on the exit of the corner, with Sette Câmara doing exactly the same thing, handing the race win to Câmara's teammateDan Ticktum. Habsburg eventually limped across the line fourth despite broken front suspension. Nonetheless, the Austrian would gain much praise from both his team boss and journalists for his final lap maneuver, along with his great season as a whole.

He returned to the series in2018 with Carlin, this time partneringJehan Daruvala,Sacha Fenestraz,Nikita Troitskiy andAmeya Vaidyanathan.[12] However, Habsburg was unable to find the form from the previous year, scoring just a lone podium atMisano and finishing 13th in the championship.

In 2019, Habsburg signed forR-Motorsport II to race theAston Martin Vantage DTM in theDeutsche Tourenwagen Masters. He scored two points finishes inCircuit Zolder and theNorisring and ended up 18th in the driver's championship.[13]
For the2020 season, Habsburg made the switch toAudi Sport Team WRT racing theAudi RS5 Turbo DTM.[14] This season was comparatively successful for Habsburg as he secured 10 points positions, one of which was a podium inCircuit Zolder. This meant that Habsburg finished tenth in the driver's championship with 68 points, beating both of his teammatesFabio Scherer andHarrison Newey.
In 2020, Habsburg competed in the24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual with Mahle Racing, driving the2018 Aston Martin Vantage GTE alongside formerIndyCar Series driverRobert Wickens and sim-racersJimmy Broadbent and Kevin Rotting. They classified in 46th place.[15][16]
Habsburg started his 2021 campaign by racing in theAsian Le Mans Series with G-Drive Racing. Together with his teammatesYifei Ye andRene Binder he won the drivers' championship, taking two wins along the way. Alongside this, Habsburg raced withHigh Class Racing in the2021 24 Hours of Daytona alongsideRobert Kubica, Dennis Andersen, and Anders Fjordbach. However, they retired from the race due to a gearbox failure.[17]

On 26 February, it was confirmed he would compete in theFIA World Endurance Championship forTeam WRT alongsideRobin Frijns andCharles Milesi, driving anOreca 07 in theLMP2 class. During the first round in the6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, Habsburg and his team finished tenth and in the following race, the8 Hours of Portimão, his team finished in fourth position. However, it was in the next race, the6 Hours of Monza that Habsburg clinched his first LMP2 podium, finishing in second place. In round four, that being the24 Hours of Le Mans, Habsburg and his Team WRT teammates clinched a dramatic LMP2 class win after their sister Team WRT car suffered a throttle Sensor failure on the final lap whilst in the lead of the race.[18] After a two-month long break the trio won the6 Hours of Bahrain.[19] The following weekend, Habsburg, Frijns and Milesi clinched the LMP2 title after scoring a third consecutive victory in the series at the8-hour race at the same venue.[20] Habsburg also became the first Austrian to win the LMP2 title in theWorld Endurance Championship.
The following year, Habsburg returned to theWEC, driving the 41 car forRealTeam by WRT withRui Andrade andNorman Nato.[21] Together, the team achieved three podiums, which included a win at the6 Hours of Monza, and finished fourth in the standings.[22]
Parallel to his WEC campaign, the Austrian competed forPrema Racing in theEuropean Le Mans Series.[23][24] The team started the season in controlling fashion, winning the season opener atPaul Ricard, after which Habsburg described himself as "honoured",[25] and taking victory inImola despiteLorenzo Colombo having to serve two drive-through penalties for a pair of separate infringements.[25] After a fifth place inMonza, Habsburg and his teammates Colombo andLouis Delétraz took yet another victory atBarcelona to extend their championship advantage.[26] Another podium came in the penultimate race atSpa,[27] before the team clinched the title with a victory at the finale inPortimão, meaning that Habsburg and Delétraz claimed the ELMS drivers' title.[28]
The Austrian driver remained withTeam WRT for the2023 WEC season, this time partneringSean Gelael and reuniting withRobin Frijns.[29] The trio ended up fourth in the standings, with bad luck costing them three important results: having lost out on a podium atLe Mans due to a suspension problem, the team was forced to retire from the lead atMonza due to an engine failure, while a wheel gun issue at the final pit stop dropped the team from first to second inBahrain.[30][31][32][33]

For the 2024 season, Habsburg stepped up to the top class in theWEC, joining theAlpine Endurance Team to drive anAlpine A424.[34] Habsburg competed in the first round, theQatar 1812 km, finishing 8th.[35] He would be injured in a crash during testing atMotorLand Aragón on 27 March, fracturing twolumbar vertebrae,[36] missing the next two rounds atImola andSpa; Alpine reserve driverJules Gounon would stand in for him.[37] He would return to the car for the24 Hours of Le Mans.[38]
