Fenite is ametasomatic alteration associated particularly withcarbonatite intrusions and created, very rarely, by advancedcarbon dioxide alteration (carbonation) offelsic andmafic rocks. It is characterised by the presence of alkali feldspar, sodic pyroxene and sodic amphibole. Fenite alteration is known, but restricted in distribution, around high-temperature metamorphictalc carbonates, generally in the form of an aureole aroundultramafic rocks. Such examples includebiotite-rich zones,amphibolite-calcite-scapolite alteration and other unusualskarn assemblages. The process is calledfenitization.
Thetype locality for fenite is theFen Complex (Norwegian: Fensfeltet) inNome,Telemark,Norway.[1]
