Felix Banaszak (born 24 October 1989) is a German politician of theAlliance 90/The Greens[1] who has been serving as a member of theBundestag since the2021 German federal election.[2][3]
Since 2024, Banaszak has also been serving as co-leader of Alliance 90/The Greens, alongsideFranziska Brantner.[4]
During his studies, Banaszak worked as legislative assistant toDirk Behrendt at theState Parliament of Berlin. From 2014 to 2017, he managed the Düsseldorf offices ofMembers of the European ParliamentTerry Reintke andSven Giegold.[5]
From 2013 to 2014, Banaszak co-chaired theGreen Youth on the national level, alongside Theresa Kalmer.[6]
From 2018 to 2022, Banaszak served as co-chair of the Green Party in North Rhine-Westphalia, alongsideMona Neubaur.[7]
In the negotiations to form a so-calledtraffic light coalition of theSocial Democrats (SPD), the Green Party and theFree Democratic Party (FDP) following the2021 federal elections, Banaszak led his party's delegation in the working group on education policy; his co-chairs from the other parties wereAndreas Stoch andJens Brandenburg.[8]
Banaszak has been a member of the GermanBundestag since 2021, elected after having been chosen for rank 6 on the NRW Green Party's closedstate list. He also ran in theDuisburg II district, where he came in 4th in both elections. In parliament, he served on the Budget Committee, the Audit Committee and the Committee on Economic Affairs.[9] On the Budget Committee, he was his parliamentary group'srapporteur on theannual budgets of theFederal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and theFederal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. On the Committee on Economic Affairs, he was his group's rapporteur on industrial policy and the energy sector.[10]
In addition to his committee assignments, Banaszak has been a member of the German delegation to theFranco-German Parliamentary Assembly since 2022.[11]
In the negotiations to form acoalition government of theChristian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Green Party underMinister-President of North Rhine-WestphaliaHendrik Wüst following the2022 state elections, Banaszak andSven Giegold led their party's delegation in the working group on finances;[12] their counterparts from the CDU wereLutz Lienenkämper andGünter Krings.[13]
Within the Green Party, Banaszak is considered to be part of itsleft wing.[18]
In his capacity as co-chair of the Green Youth, Banaszak opposed a 2014 motion to make the group's membership incompatible with a membership forRote Hilfe e.V., a German far-leftprisoner support group.[19]
Along withVolker Beck,Terry Reintke andMax Lucks, Banaszak was temporarily detained when Beck wanted to speak publicly atIstanbul Pride in June 2016.[20][21]
Since 2014, Banaszak has been living inDuisburg.[22] He isbisexual,[23] married to a woman and has a daughter (*2022).[24]
