In theRussian Federation, acity of federal importance[1][2] (Russian:город федерального значения,romanizedgorod federalnogo znacheniya), also known as afederal city, is acity that has a status of both an inhabited locality and a constituentfederal subject. Russia has three federal cities:Moscow,Saint Petersburg, andSevastopol,[3] which wasannexed in 2014 but remains internationally recognised as part ofUkraine.[4]

Moscow and Saint Petersburg arethe largest cities in the country:Moscow is thenational capital andSaint Petersburg is a former Russian capital and an important port city by theBaltic Sea.[5] Currently,Sevastopol houses theSevastopol Naval Base, the main port of the RussianBlack Sea Fleet.
