Fate Leonard Echols (June 29, 1939 – October 10, 2002) was an American professionalfootballtackle who played two seasons with theSt. Louis Cardinals of theNational Football League (NFL). He was selected by the Cardinals in the first round of the1962 NFL draft after playingcollege football atNorthwestern University.
Fate Leonard Echols was born on June 29, 1939, inUnion Springs, Alabama.[1] He playedhigh school footballWashington High School inSouth Bend, Indiana as alineman.[1][2] He was named all-league during his junior and senior seasons.[2] Echols was a team captain in 1957.[2] He was inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame in 2013.[2]
Echols was a member of theNorthwestern Wildcats ofNorthwestern University from 1958 to 1961 and was a two-year starter.[1][3] As a senior in 1961, he earnedAssociated Press second-team All-Big Ten Conference andUnited Press International first-team All-Big Ten honors.[4][5] He was invited to theEast–West Shrine Game after his senior season.[6] In December 1961, he visited a hospital for sick children with the rest of the Shrine game players.[6]
In December 1961, Echols was selected by theSt. Louis Cardinals in the first round, with the sixth overall pick, of the1962 NFL draft and by theNew York Titans in the third round, with the 21st overall pick, of the1962 AFL draft.[7] He signed with the Cardinals on December 8, 1961.[8] He was released on September 12, 1962, but late re-signed.[8] Echols then played in five games during the 1962 season before being placed on injured reserve.[8][7] He appeared in three games, starting one, for the Cardinals in 1963 before being released on October 8, 1963.[8][7]
Echols signed with the NFL'sPhiladelphia Eagles on October 14, 1963.[8] He was released on October 24, 1963, without appearing in a game.[8]
Echols was signed by theWashington Redskins of the NFL on June 10, 1966.[8] He was released on August 10, 1966.[8]
Echols signed with theCincinnati Bengals of the AFL in 1968.[8] He was later released on July 29, 1968.[8]
Echols died on October 10, 2002, inSpringfield, Illinois.[1]
