Fanning's Castle (Irish:Caisleán Uí Fhionáin), also calledWhitamore's Castle,[1] is the remains of atower house andNational Monument[2] located inLimerick, Ireland.[3]

Fanning's Castle is located off Creagh Lane and Mary Street, opposite thetholsel,[4] onKing's Island.[5][6]

History

Fanning's Castle was built c. 1641 byMayor of Limerick Dominic Fanning.[7]

Building

The walls of the tower house are of roughly squaredlimestone blocks of varying sizes. It was originally fivestoreys high, but only four storeys are now visible above ground level.[8] The windows showogee andmullions.[9]

The tower house incorporated aturret staircase andbattlements.[10]
