Falkirk West (Gaelic:An Eaglais Bhreac an Iar) is aburgh constituency of theScottish Parliament covering part of thecouncil area ofFalkirk.[2] It elects oneMember of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) by theplurality (first past the post) method of election. Under theadditional-member electoral system used for elections to the Scottish Parliament, it has also been one of nine constituencies in theCentral Scotlandelectoral region, which elects seven additional members, in addition to nine constituency MSPs, to produce a form ofproportional representation for the region as a whole. Following thesecond periodic review of Scottish Parliament boundaries, Falkirk West will form part of the newCentral Scotland and Lothians West from the2026 Scottish Parliament election onwards.
The constituency was created at the same time as the Scottish Parliament, for the1999 Scottish Parliament election. Ahead of the2011 Scottish Parliament election the boundaries of the seat were reformed and reshaped.[3][4] Further boundary changes were effected by the second periodic review in 2025.
The seat has been held byMichael Matheson of theScottish National Party since the2007 Scottish Parliament election.
The other eight constituencies of the Central Scotland region are:Airdrie and Shotts,Coatbridge and Chryston,Cumbernauld and Kilsyth,East Kilbride,Falkirk East,Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse,Motherwell and Wishaw andUddingston and Bellshill. The region covers all of theFalkirk council area, all of theNorth Lanarkshire council area and part of theSouth Lanarkshire council area.
From 2026, the other eight constituencies of the Central Scotland and Lothians West region will beAirdrie,Almond Valley,Bathgate,Coatbridge and Chryston,Cumbernauld and Kilsyth,Falkirk East and Linlithgow,Motherwell and Wishaw, andUddingston and Bellshill.[5]
The constituency was created at the same time as the Scottish Parliament, in1999, with the name and boundaries of an existingWestminster constituency. In2005, however, Scottish Westminster (House of Commons) constituencies were mostly replaced with new constituencies.[6]
The Holyrood constituency covered a western portion of theFalkirk council area. The rest of the Falkirk area has been covered byFalkirk East, also within the Central Scotland electoral region. Following the second periodic review, the seat was slightly enlarged to take in theStenhousemuir area (formerly in Falkirk East). The remainder of Falkirk is to be covered byFalkirk East and Linlithgow, which will also cover a portion of theWest Lothian council area.
From the2011 Scottish Parliament election, Falkirk West was formed from the following electoral wards:[7]
Following the second review of Scottish Parliament boundaries, the following Falkirk Council electoral wards were used to redefine the seat:[8]
