Fabio Maria Asquini (14 August 1802 – 22 December 1878)[1] was aCardinal of theRoman Catholic Church, Prefect of theSacred Congregation of Indulgences and Sacred Relics andCamerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals. He was born on 14 August 1802 inFagagna.
Asquini was educated at theCollegio Ghislieri then theCollegio Romano (where he received aDoctorate of Theology) and finally theLa Sapienza University where he studied law.[2] He was ordained on 26 February 1825 and was appointed as adomestic prelate to thePope. He was electedTitular Latin patriarch of Antioch in 1837 and was consecrated byCarlo Cardinal Odescalchi.
He was elevated to Cardinalin pectore on 22 January 1844 and was appointedLatin Patriarch of Constantinople, a position he held until 1851. He was officially revealed as a Cardinal on 21 April 1845. On 24 April, he was appointedCardinal-Priest ofSt Stefano al Monte Celio where he served for almost 33 years until 1877.
In 1847 Asquini was named Prefect of theSacred Congregation of Indulgences and Sacred Relics and between 1862 and 1863 he was appointedCamerlengo of the Sacred College of Cardinals.[3] Asquini participated in both the1846 Papal Conclave and the1878 Papal Conclave as well as theFirst Vatican Council. Finally, in 1877 he was appointedCardinal-Priest ofSan Lorenzo in Lucina where he served until his death in 1878.
