Fabiano Ribeiro de Freitas (born 29 February 1988), known simply asFabiano, is a professionalfootballer who plays as agoalkeeper forCypriot First Division clubOmonia. Born in Brazil, he plays for theCyprus national team.

Club career

São Paulo and Olhanense

Born inMundo Novo, Bahia,[2] Fabiano joinedSão Paulo in 2006, aged 18. During his four-year spell he only played twoSérie A games, also being loaned to several modest teams.[3] He made his debut in the top division on 13 October 2007 in a 1–1 draw againstFluminense at theMaracanã Stadium where he saved apenalty, being part of the squads that won back-to-back national championships.[3]

On 28 June 2011, Fabiano signed with Portuguese clubOlhanense.[4] He made his debut in thePrimeira Liga on 13 August in a 1–1 draw atSporting CP,[5] and went on to appear in all league matches duringthe season as theAlgarve side retained their status.

Porto

Fabiano moved toPorto in late May 2012, penning a four-year contract.[6] He acted as understudy to compatriotHelton in hisdebut campaign, subsequently becoming a starter after an injury to the latter.[7]

On 21 April 2015, in an away fixture in thequarter-finals of theUEFA Champions League againstBayern Munich, Fabiano's team lost 6–1, making it the worst in theirEuropean history.[8] In the subsequent off-season, he was loaned toFenerbahçe.[9]

Back at theEstádio do Dragão, Fabiano missed the vast majority of2017–18 due to an injury to his right knee.[10] He earned a champions' winners medal in the last matchday after playing the last minutes of the 1–0 away win overVitória de Guimarães, havingreplaced third choiceVaná.[11]

Fabiano played all the matches save one in the2018–19 edition of theTaça de Portugal, where his team reachedthe final.[12][13] He was not featured in the domestic league, however.

Omonia

Fabiano signed a one-year deal withOmonia of theCypriot First Division on 17 October 2019, as afree agent.[14] He made his debut three days later, in a 0–0 away draw withAnorthosis Famagusta.[15][16] In January 2020, he sustained an injury which kept him out of action until the abandonment ofthe season due to theCOVID-19 pandemic;[17] on 9 June, he agreed to an extension until 2022.[18]

On 16 September 2020, Fabiano was in goal for aChampions League qualifier againstRed Star Belgrade, saving two attempts in thepenalty shootout to help his team reach the group stage of aEuropean competition for the first time in their history.[19] He was crownedchampion on the domestic front, a first for the club since 2010;[20] as a result, he was voted Footballer of the Year and also renewed his contract until June 2024.[21][22]

In the2021–22 campaign, Fabiano was involved in four shootouts, helping Omonia beat Anorthosis in theCypriot Super Cup,[23]Flora Tallinn in thethird qualifying round of theUEFA Europa League[24] andEthnikos Achna inthe final of theCypriot Cup; he prevented the opposition from scoring a total of six times.[25]

On 24 May 2023, Fabianowon the Cypriot Cup for the second year in a row.[26]

International career

After six years living in the country, Fabiano became acitizen of Cyprus.[27] He won his firstcap for itsnational team on 6 September 2025 aged 37, in a 1–0 away loss againstAustria in the2026 FIFA World Cupqualifiers; he was beaten by a 54th-minutepenalty fromMarcel Sabitzer.[28]
