F♯ (F-sharp; also known asfa dièse orfi) is the seventhsemitone of thesolfège.
It lies achromatic semitone aboveF and adiatonic semitone belowG, thus beingenharmonic tosol bémol orG♭ (G-flat) in12 equal temperament. However, in other temperaments, such asquarter-comma meantone, it is not the same as G♭. G♭ is amajor third below B♭, whereas F♯ is a major third above D (a minor third below A). Another enharmonic note is E
(E-double sharp).[1]
When calculated inequal temperament with a reference ofA abovemiddle C as 440Hz, thefrequency of the F♯ above middle C (or F♯4) is approximately 369.994Hz.[2] Seepitch (music) for a discussion of historical variations in frequency.
