ThegenusEumeces (family Scincidae) comprises fourAfrican toMiddle-Easternskink species.
Recently two taxonomic revisions have been made regarding the 19th centurygenusEumeces. They both resulted in similar results; thegenus isparaphyletic and must be "sliced up" into several differentgenera. Griffithet al. (2000) proposed that thetype species forEumeces,E. pavimentatus, which is considered by many to be asubspecies ofEumeces schneiderii, should be changed toLacerta fasciata, so that thegenus nameEumeces would stay with the most species-richclade. However, this petition has not been verified by theInternational Commission on Zoological Nomenclature. Schimtzet al. argued that Griffithet al. violated the Code and rejected the proposal on good grounds. Thus only the Africanspecies of theEumeces schneiderii group belong to thegenusEumeces.
