Eugene Martin Nugent (born 21 October 1958) is anIrishRoman Catholicprelate who has served asApostolic Nuncio to Bahrain,Kuwait andQatar since January 2021.

Early life and education

Nugent was born in Gurtaderra,Scariff,County Clare on 21 October 1958.[1]

He attended primary school at Clonusker National School and secondary school at Scariff Community College. Nugent studied for the priesthood atSt Patrick's College, Maynooth, where he was awarded aBachelor of Arts inCeltic studies from theNational University of Ireland, and thePontifical Irish College,Rome, where he was awarded abaccalaureate in theology from thePontifical Gregorian University.[2]

Nugent wasordained a priest for theDiocese of Killaloe on 9 July 1983.[3]

Presbyteral ministry

Following ordination, Nugent completed alicentiate in canon law at thePontifical Gregorian University, before returning to theDiocese of Killaloe in 1984, where he received his first pastoral assignment ascurate in thecathedral parish inEnnis until 1987.[4]

Nugent returned to Rome in 1988, where he worked in the Section for General Affairs of theSecretariat of State, before entering thePontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in 1991, in preparation for a diplomatic career for the Holy See.[5] He was awarded adoctorate in canon law from thePontifical Gregorian University in 1992.[4]

Diplomatic career

Upon completion of studies at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, Nugent entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 1 July 1992, with his first diplomatic appointment as secretary to theApostolic Nunciature to Turkey,Israel and Palestine.[6] He was subsequently appointed to theApostolic Nunciature to the Philippines in 2000, but while he was officially assigned to the apostolic nunciature in Manila, he resided in Hong Kong, from where he led the Holy See Study Mission. During his mission, Nugent handled relations between Catholic communities in China and the Holy See,[7][8] however his effectiveness in doing so was compromised by the refusal of theBeijing government to allow him to travel regularly to mainland China, resulting in relations often being maintained in secret.[9][10][a]

Apostolic Nuncio to Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles

Nugent was appointedApostolic Nuncio to Madagascar,Apostolic Delegate to Comoros and Réunion andtitular archbishop ofDomnach Sechnaill byPope Benedict XVI on 13 February 2010.[3][11][12][13] He was also appointedApostolic Nuncio to Mauritius andSeychelles on 13 March.[14]

Nugent was consecrated by theCardinal Secretary of State,Tarcisio Bertone, on 18 March inSt Peter's Basilica,Rome.[9][12]

Apostolic Nuncio to Haiti

Nugent was appointedApostolic Nuncio to Haiti byPope Francis on 10 January 2015.[15][16][17] He championed many causes during his mission, including the reconstruction of churches following the2010 earthquake to facilitating political dialogue in order to end thepolitical crisis in the country.[18]

Apostolic Nuncio to Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar

Nugent was appointedApostolic Nuncio to Kuwait andQatar by Pope Francis on 7 January 2021.[19][6][20][21]

He was also appointedApostolic Nuncio to Bahrain on 11 February.[22]
