Estonia first competed as a nation at the1920 Summer Olympics, two years afterdeclaring independence from the then warringRussian andGerman Empires in 1918.[1] The EstonianNational Olympic Committee was established in 1923.[2]

Estonia participated in bothSummer andWinter Games until the country wasinvaded and occupied by theSoviet Union in 1940. From 1952 to 1988, Estonian athletes competed under the Soviet flag.[1] Notably, the1980 Summer Olympicssailing regatta was hosted inTallinn, during the period of Soviet occupation.[3]

Athletes representing independent Estonia made their Winter Olympics debut at theII Olympic Winter Games 1928 inSt. Moritz, competing inspeed skating. Following therestoration of independence in 1991, Estonia resumed participation as a sovereign nation starting from the1992 Winter Olympics inAlbertville and the1992 Summer Olympics inBarcelona.[1]

Jüri Lossman became the first athlete representing Estonia to win an Olympic medal of any colour, earning silver in themen's marathon. At the same Games,Alfred Neuland won Estonia's first Olympic gold medal, triumphing in themen's lightweight weightlifting event.[1][4][5] At the2002 Winter Olympics inSalt Lake City,Andrus Veerpalu became the first athlete representing independent Estonia to win a Winter Olympic medal, taking gold in themen's 15 km cross-country skiing event.[4][5]

Since regaining independence, Estonia has participated in every edition of both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Estonia has won most of its medals inwrestling (11),weightlifting (7),cross-country skiing (7) andathletics (6).

Weightlifting

Weightlifting was first included in the Olympic programme at the inaugural 1896 Summer Olympics. It was excluded from the 1900, 1908 and 1912 Games but have been included every other time.

Estonia was quite successful before the second world war, winning 1 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals.

Their most successful weightlifter wasAlfred Neuland who won gold inmen's 67.5 kg in 1920 and silver inmen's 75 kg in 1924. In the latter eventJaan Kikkas won the bronze for Estonia too.

Estonia's second most successful weightlifter wasArnold Luhaäär who also won two medals in weightlifting, a silver inmen's +82.5 kg in 1928 and a bronze in the same event in1936.

Alfred Schmidt won silver inmen's 60 kg in 1920.Harald Tammer won bronze inmen's +82.5 kg in 1924.

Wrestling

Wrestling was included in the inaugural 1896 Summer Olympic programme and has been included in all Summer Games except for 1900.

Wrestling is Estonia's most successful sport in terms of both gold medals won, with 5, and overall medals won, with 11.

Cross-country skiing has been was included in the Olympic programme since the inaugural 1924 Winter Olympics.

Cross-country skiing is the winter sport Estonia has had most success in - winning 7 medals; 4 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze. Their most successful cross-country skiers areAndrus Veerpalu andKristina Šmigun-Vähi who have won 2 gold and 1 silver medal each.

Andrus Veerpalu won gold in men's 15 km classical in2002 and2006 and silver inmen's 50 km classical in 2002.

Kristina Šmigun-Vähi won gold inwomen's 10 km classical andwomen's 15 km pursuit in 2006 and a silver inwomen's 10 km freestyle in 2010.

Jaak Mae is their remaining medalist, he won the bronze behind Andrus Veerpalu inmen's 15 km classical in 2002.
