Ester Aparecida dos Santos (born 9 December 1982), commonly knownmononymously asEster, is a Brazilian formerfootballer. She played as a "volante" (defensive midfielder) for clubs includingChelsea of the EnglishFA WSL andBV Cloppenburg of the GermanFrauen-Bundesliga. Ester was part of theBrazil women's national football team which finished as runners-up in the2007 World Cup and2008 Summer Olympics.

Career

Ester began playing as a child in her neighbourhood near theSão Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport. She was signed forClube Atlético Juventus after a trial, then moved on toSantos FC.[1]

In 2007 Ester played forCEPE-Caxias in Rio de Janeiro. She rejoined Santos in January 2008, following her successful season away.[2]

In the2008 WPS International Draft, Ester was selected bySky Blue FC alongside compatriotRosana,[3] but did not join the team. Instead Ester found success in theCopa Libertadores Femenina with Santos in2009 and2010.[4]

Ester was part of a Brazilian contingent at Russian championsWFC Rossiyanka in 2012, playing in theUEFA Women's Champions League defeat toTurbine Potsdam.[5]

In2013, Ester made a total of 10FA WSL appearances forChelsea, before departing for newly promoted Bundesliga clubBV Cloppenburg in September 2013 with three games of the English season remaining. ChelseamanagerEmma Hayes soldSofia Jakobsson to the German team at the same time, saying: "We received an offer from Cloppenburg which we feIt was good business for the club."[6]

WhenVasco da Gama relaunched again in 2016, Ester was signed to provide experience to the team's younger players.[7] After her retirement from football Ester settled inArapongas and worked as a businesswoman.[8]

International

Ester was called up to theBrazil women's national football team in 2003.[1] She had been on the fringes of the squad, until winning her place in midfield during Brazil's2007 Pan American Games campaign. She maintained her position as the team's defensive midfielder for the2007 FIFA Women's World Cup. She played in thefinal, which Brazil lost 2–0 toGermany.[9]

Ester played in the2011 FIFA Women's World Cup as well as the2008 and2012 Summer Olympics.[10] At the beginning of the 2012 tournament in London, she had 56caps and one goal for the national team.[11]
