Erich Karkoschka (born 1955) is aplanetary researcher at theLunar and Planetary Laboratory of theUniversity of Arizona. He discovered a satellite ofUranus, S/1986 U 10 (later namedPerdita) on photographs taken by theVoyager 2 spacecraft.[1] He has assembled a number of movies including: theHuygens landing on the moonTitan,[2] the seasonal patterns on Uranus,[3] and a rare tripleeclipse onJupiter.[4] The Jupiter and Uranus images were released as US postage stamps in 2016.[5]
His book,The Observer's Sky Atlas,[6] has been translated into several languages as a resource for those interested in observing the sky.
An asteroid,30786 Karkoschka (1988 QC), is named in his honour.[7]
