Eric John Gaven (/ˈɡeɪvən/; 16 March 1905 – 18 January 1974) was a member of theQueensland Legislative Assembly.[1]
Gaven was born atBrisbane,Queensland, the son of William Henry Gaven and his wife Emily Mary (née Price). He was educated atDutton Park andEast Brisbane and started his working life at a greengrocer inWoolloongabba. He then worked for thePostmaster-General's Department before running a banana farm at Upper Coomera. He then became aproperty developer on theGold Coast.
On 15 February 1930 Gaven married Janet Elizabeth Isabel Spencer[1] (died 1987)[2] and together had two daughters. He died atSouthport in January 1974[1] and wasCremated at theMt Thompson Crematorium.[3]
Gaven was a councillor on theNerang Shire Council from 1935 to 1949 and chairman of the newly establishedAlbert Shire Council in 1949–1950.[1]
He won the seat ofSouthport at the1950 Queensland state election for theCountry Party. He held the seat for 10 years before it was abolished for the1960 Queensland state election and Gaven then won the new seat ofSouth Coast, which he held until 1966.[1]
He was a member of the Commonwealth parliamentary delegation to New Delhi in 1957. The seat ofGaven bears his name as does the Gaven Way, linking thePacific Highway between Nerang and Broadbeach.[1]
