Eric Chua Swee LeongPBM (Chinese:蔡瑞隆;pinyin:Cài Ruìlóng; born 1979)[1] is a Singaporean politician who has been serving asSenior Parliamentary Secretary for Culture, Community and Youth andSenior Parliamentary Secretary for Social and Family Development concurrently since 2022.[2] A member of the governingPeople's Action Party (PAP), he has been theMember of Parliament (MP) representing theQueenstown division ofTanjong Pagar GRC since 2020.
Prior to entering politics, Chua served in theSingapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and had been actively volunteering in grassroots activities with thePeople's Association (PA) in Tanjong Pagar GRC.
He made his political debut in the2020 general election as part of a five-member PAP team contesting in Tanjong Pagar GRC and won 63.13% of the vote.
A recipient of thePublic Service Commission Local Merit Scholarship, Chua completed a bachelor's degree incommunication studies at theWee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information atNanyang Technological University. For his postgraduate studies, he received a grant under theFulbright Program and completed a master's degree incommunication management at theAnnenberg School for Communication and Journalism at theUniversity of Southern California.[3] He is also an elected member of thePhi Kappa Phi honor society for academic excellence.[4]
Chua had worked for 17 years in theSingapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) andMinistry of Home Affairs. He held the rank ofcolonel in the SCDF and had served as head of operations of the 1st SCDF Division and commander of the 3rd SCDF Division.[5] He was also the director of the SGSecure Programme Office.[5][6]
Chua was a grassroots volunteer inTanjong Pagar GRC for 15 years, focusing on helping youths from poorer family backgrounds,[5][6][7] and had been the Chairman of thePeople's Association Youth Movement's Central Youth Council.[7][5][6] Chua received theCommendation Medal in 2017 and thePublic Service Medal in 2019.[4]
Chua was announced as aPeople's Action Party (PAP) candidate contesting as part of the five-member PAP team inTanjong Pagar GRC during the2020 general election.[5][6] After the PAP team with 63.13% of the vote against theProgress Singapore Party,[8] Chua became aMember of Parliament representing theQueenstown ward of Tanjong Pagar GRC.
On 27 July 2020, he was appointedParliamentary Secretary at theMinistry of Social and Family Development andMinistry of Culture, Community and Youth.[1] On 13 June 2022, Chua was promoted as Senior Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Social and Family Development and Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth.[9]
Chua is married and has one child.[4] On 3 February 2022, Chua revealed he tested positive forCOVID-19.[10]
