Enarete was the daughter ofDeimachus and wife of KingAeolus of Thessaly, son of theGreek progenitorHellen.[1] By the latter, she became the mother of his children includingCretheus,Sisyphus,Athamas,Salmoneus,Deion,Magnes,Perieres,Canace,Alcyone,Peisidice,Calyce andPerimede.[2]

Enarete may be similar toEurydice who bore Salmoneus, Sisyphus and Cretheus to Aeolus.[3]

Notes

[edit]
  1. ^Enarete is the form found in the manuscripts ofBibliotheca1.7.1, whichWest (1985, pp. 59–60) takes to be a misspelling of Aenarete, the form written in thescholia toPlato,Minos 315c, since Enarete cannot stand in ahexameter line and theBibliotheca's primary source at this point is theepicHesiodicCatalogue of Women. At scholia toPindar,Pythian Odes 4.252 yet another form—Enarea (Ἐνάρεα orἘναρέᾱ)—is found.
