TheEmpire News was a Sundaynewspaper in theUnited Kingdom.The newspaper was founded in 1884 inManchester asThe Umpire. A penny newspaper, it was the first successful provincial Sunday newspaper in England. Owned by H. S. Jennings, theUmpire was subtitled "A Sporting, Athletic, Theatrical and General Newspaper", and focused on sports and theatre news.[1] In 1894, it absorbed the former daily newspaper, theManchester Examiner and Times.[2]
In 1917,Edward Hulton bought the paper and renamed it theEmpire, and shortly after, theEmpire News.[2][3] Along with Hulton's other papers, theNews was acquired byLord Beaverbrook and then sold toLord Rothermere, later becoming part ofAllied Northern Newspapers and laterKemsley Newspapers.[3]
The paper was renamed theSunday Empire News in 1944, but in 1950 became theEmpire News and the Umpire and in 1953 was back to being theEmpire News.[2] In 1955, theSunday Chronicle was merged with theEmpire News,[3] and the paper's title became theEmpire News and the Sunday Chronicle.[2]
Roy Thomson bought the paper in 1959, but he merged it into theSunday Times in 1960.[3][2]
