Emiliano Buendía Stati (born 25 December 1996) is an Argentine professionalfootballer who plays as anattacking midfielder orwinger forPremier League clubAston Villa and theArgentina national team.

Buendía's senior career began atGetafe with whom he spent four years, including a short spell with Spanish clubCultural Leonesa, before he moved to England, joiningNorwich City in 2018 and Aston Villa in 2021.

Club career

Born inMar del Plata, Argentina, Buendía started his career withGetafe.[citation needed] On 30 March 2014, still a junior, he made his senior debut, starting forthe reserves in a 2–1 away win againstPuerta Bonita in theSegunda División B.[4] He scored his first goal on 13 April, with the first of a 2–0 win away toPeña Sport.[5]

Buendía started the2014–15 season still with the reserve team and in the third level,[6] notably scoring twice in a 3–0 home win overFuenlabrada.[7] He played his first match as a professional on 5 December 2014, as asubstitute forÁngel Lafita in a 3–0 home win againstEibar in theCopa del Rey.[8]

Buendía made hisLa Liga debut on 1 February 2015, coming on as a late substitute in a 1–0 away loss againstAlmería.[9] He scored his first goal in the same competition on 27 September, with the second in a 3–0 home win againstLevante.[citation needed]

On 5 July 2016, despite suffering relegation with Getafe at the end of the2015–16 La Liga season, Buendía signed a new five-year contract with the club.[10] On 27 July 2017, he wasloaned to fellow second-tier clubCultural Leonesa, for one year.[11]

Norwich City

On 8 June 2018, Buendía signed a four-year deal withEFL Championship clubNorwich City.[12] He scored his first goal for Norwich in a 1–0 win overBrentford on 27 October,[13] and played an integral role as one of the main creative attacking players in the team – scoring 7 further league goals as the club swept to promotion to thePremier League and the Championship title.[14] Fans subsequently voted him into third place in theannual Player of the Season awards.[15]

On 8 July 2019, he signed a new five-year contract to stay at Norwich until the June 2024.[14] During December 2019, Buendía created 29 chances for his teammates, which was the most chances created by a player in a single month in the Premier League since the stat began to be recorded in 2003–04.[16]

On 7 July 2020, Buendía scored his first goal in the Premier League, coming in a 2–1 away defeat toWatford.[17] Norwich would lose their next match toWest Ham United, a result which confirmed their relegation back to the Championship after only a single season in the top flight.[18]

2020–21 season: Promotion and Championship POTS

On 6 April 2021, Buendía scored once and provided three assists in a 7–0 victory overHuddersfield Town.[19] On 17 April, Norwich secured automatic promotion back into the Premier League,[20] and secured theChampionship title on 1 May with a 4–1 win overReading.[21][22]

On 29 April, following acampaign in which Buendía scored 15 league goals and added a further 16 assists, he won the EFL Championship Player of the Season award.[23] He was also named asNorwich's Player of the Season, becoming only the fourth player from outside the British Isles to win the award.[24]

Aston Villa

On 7 June 2021, it was announced that an agreement had been reached for 24-year-old Buendía to be transferred to fellow Premier League clubAston Villa once he had returned from international duty with Argentina.[25] The deal was completed on 10 June. The transfer fee was believed to be worth around £33 million, rising to £38 million with potential bonuses,[26] and was confirmed to be both Aston Villa's record signing[27] and Norwich City's record sale.[28]

Buendía made his debut on 14 August 2021, in a 3–2 away loss toWatford on the opening day of the2021–22 season.[29] He scored his first goal for Villa on 28 August 2021, in a 1–1 draw at home toBrentford.[30]

On 9 August 2023, on the eve of the Premier League season, Buendía suffered what was described as a "significant knee injury" in training and would require a scan and treatment from a specialist.[31] The injury was confirmed to beanterior cruciate ligament injury which required surgery and meant that Buendía missed the entirety of the2023–24 season. Buendía returned to training in May 2024 after nine months out.[32] Buendía's return to football came on 27 July 2024, almost a year to the day of his injury, in a pre-season friendly againstColumbus Crew.[33] Buendía made his Premier League comeback on 14 September 2024, as a late substitute in a 3–2 victory overEverton,[34] after appearing as one of the permitted overage players inAston Villa's U21 team in theEFL Trophy earlier in the month, scoring twice in a 3–2 victory overFleetwood Town.[35]

On 29 January 2025, Aston Villa announced that Buendía had signed a contract extension with the club, and would joinBundesliga clubBayer Leverkusen on loan until the end of the season.[36]

Despite being told he could leave in the summer, at the start of the2025–26 season, Buendía re-established himself as a first team regular for Aston Villa.[37] He scored three times in the first 12 games of the season, including finishing off a team goal in a 2–1 away victory overTottenham Hotspur which was awardedBBC Goal of the Month for October.[38] On 7 November 2025, the same goal was awarded the officialPremier League Goal of the Month.[39]

International career

On 16 September 2014, Buendía was called up to theSpain under-19s.[40] On 29 April of the following year, he was called up byArgentina under-20s for2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup,[41] and joined the latter's training camp on 5 May 2015.[42] In May 2021, Buendía was called up to theArgentina senior squad for the first time.[43][44] On 1 February 2022, he made his debut in a 1–0 home victory overColombia.[45]

After a three year absence, Buendía was called up to the Argentina side again in November 2025 for a friendly againstAngola.[46] On 14 November, Buendía came off the bench in a 2–0 victory.[47]
