Emerson Rodrigues Ávila (born 16 July 1967) is a Brazilian professionalfootballcoach.[1]

Career

Born inBelo Horizonte,Minas Gerais, Ávila began his career as a fitness coach ofSanta Tereza [pt] in 1992. In 1996, he left the side to become a coach ofCruzeiro'sInfantil team.[2]

Ávila worked for Cruzeiro's youth categories for ten years before being named assistant manager of the main squad in 2005. On 30 April 2007, he was named interim head coach afterPaulo Autuori resigned.[3] His spell lasted one match, as he led the club to a 2–0 win overAtlético Mineiro in the second leg of the2007 Campeonato Mineiro Finals, with his side losing the title 4–2 on aggregate.

Ávila subsequently returned to his assistant role after the appointment ofDorival Júnior, before being named head coach ofIpatinga in theSérie B on 18 July 2007.[4] He led the club to a first-ever promotion to theSérie A at the end ofthe season, but was dismissed on 18 February 2008, after three losses in the first four matches of the new campaign.[5]

On 7 April 2008, Ávila was named in charge ofGrêmio Barueri in the second division.[6] Sacked on 14 June, he returned to Cruzeiro on 3 July, but now as a technical coordinator.[7]

Ávila returned to Ipatinga on 17 July 2009, with the club back in the second tier,[8] but was relieved from his duties on 22 October, after only five wins in 18 matches.[9] On 29 January 2010, he took overBoavista forthe year'sCampeonato Carioca,[10] but was replaced by Jorge Porto on 25 March.[11]

Back to Cruzeiro and his role as a technical coordinator, Ávila was named interim head coach of the side in June 2010, afterAdilson Batista resigned.[12] He returned to his previous role after the appointment ofCuca, and was named head coach of theBrazil national under-17 team on 5 November 2010.[13]

Ávila led the under-17 team to the2011 South American U-17 Championship title, but finished fourth in the2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup. On 2 September 2011, he was appointed back at Cruzeiro, replacing firedJoel Santana.[14]

Ávila only lasted six matches in charge of Cruzeiro, being replaced byVagner Mancini on 26 September 2011 and subsequently returning to his coordinator role.[15] On 7 December 2011, he was appointedNacional-MG head coach.[16]

Dismissed by Nacional on 27 February 2012,[17] Ávila returned to theBrazilian Football Confederation and was in charge of theirunder-20 team. On 20 March 2013, he was announced as head coach of the under-20 team ofCorinthians,[18] but was replaced byOsmar Loss in September.[19]

Ávila was appointed in charge ofEsportivo for the 2014 season, but was sacked on 4 February of that year, after just five matches.[20] He returned to Cruzeiro on 24 September 2015, as a coordinator of the youth categories;[21] he was also in charge of the club's under-20 team.

Dismissed by Cruzeiro on 1 July 2019,[22] Ávila returned to coaching duties on 18 December 2019, after being named head coach ofVilla Nova.[23] He was sacked the following 10 February, after four matches,[24] and was presented atBetim Futebol seven days later, for the 2020Campeonato Mineiro Módulo II.[25]

Ávila left Betim on 19 December 2020, after failing to achieve promotion,[26] and was named in charge ofPouso Alegre four days later.[27] He left the latter club on 7 May of the following year,[28] and returned to Betim on 2 August 2021.[29]

On 19 October 2021, Ávila joinedJair Ventura's staff atJuventude, as his assistant.[30] Both left the club on 11 February 2022,[31] and he moved toGoiás with Ventura on 14 April, under the same role.

On 1 December 2022, despite Ventura's departure, Ávila was kept in Goiás' staff for the upcoming season.[32] On 11 April 2023, after the dismissal ofGuto Ferreira, he was named interim head coach,[33] and remained in the role for two months before the arrival ofArmando Evangelista.

On 22 June 2023, Ávila announced his departure from Goiás.[34] On 27 December, he was named head coach ofLondrina for the upcoming season,[35] but was dismissed the following 14 May.[36]

On 9 July 2024, Ávila was named head coach ofAparecidense also in theSérie C.[37]
