TheState emblem of Bhutan (རྒྱལ་ཡོངས་ལས་རྟགས་) maintains several elements of theflag of Bhutan, with slightly different artistry, and containsMahayanaBuddhist symbolism.

The state emblem ofBhutan was designed by aMongolian artist and it was commissioned byAshi Tashi Dorji, the sister of the Queen Grandmother. Thedorji was a weapon used by Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhāva) to quell evil spirits.[1]

The official description of the emblem is as follows:

The national emblem, contained in acircle, is composed of a doublediamond-thunderbolt (dorje) placed above alotus, surmounted by ajewel and framed by twodragons. The thunderbolt represents theharmony between secular and religious power. The lotus symbolizespurity; the jewel expressessovereign power; and the two dragons,male andfemale, stand for the name of the country which they proclaim with their great voice, thethunder.
