Ellison Litton Barber[1] is an American journalist and correspondent forNBC News. She frequently reports fromconflict zones and contributes reporting to all NBC News platforms, includingNBC News,MSNBC andNBC News Now.[2] Originally fromAtlanta,Georgia, she graduated fromWofford College with aBachelor of Arts inEnglish in 2012.[3]

Barber spent months on the ground reporting on theRussian invasion of Ukraine[4] and was among the first group of international correspondents to report on theGaza war in 2023.[5][6]

Career

Barber served as a general assignment reporter and thePrince George's County Deputy Bureau Chief for Washington'sCBSaffiliate,WUSA.[7] At WUSA, Barber reported on an array of stories,[8][9][10] including the2015 Washington, D.C., mass killing of the Savopoulos family and their housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa, the March 2016 U.S. Capitol lockdown,[11] and the protests following the shooting of Terrence Sterling.[12][13] While at WUSA, Barber interviewedWashington Capitals' starAlexander Ovechkin during a blizzard.[14] The unintentional encounter went viral.[15][16][17]

Fox News (2017-2020)

In April 2017, she joinedFox News as a general assignment correspondent.[13][18]

In 2019, Barber reported on thepolitical turmoil in Venezuela and the resultingrefugee crisis in neighboring countries.[19][20] She and her crew were reporting on the Venezuela-Colombia border when gunfire erupted near theSimón Bolívar International Bridge[21] and a thirty-minute shootout ensued.[22][23][24] Barber was also the first reporter for a U.S.-based English-language network to travel toMaicao, Colombia and cover theUNHCR assistance camp set up to help refugees fleeing the political crisis in Venezuela.[25]

NBC News (2020-present)

Barber joined NBC News as a New York-based correspondent on April 15, 2020.[26]

She extensively reported on the2019-20 coronavirus pandemicin the United States.[27][28][29][30] She reported inside COVID ICUs across the country, filing reports from Alaska[31] to Mississippi.[32][33]

Much of her career at NBC has been spent as awar correspondent covering conflicts around the globe.[34][35][36] She reported from the frontlines of theUkraine-Russia War[37][38][39] and theGaza war.[40][34][35] While reporting along theGaza border, she and her team came under rocket fire during multiple live reports.[5][41]

Barber reported from Haiti following the2024 Haitian jailbreak and the ouster of then-Acting PresidentAriel Henry.[42]

Accolades

Barber was reporting outside of the United States Capitol as a mobattacked and overtook the Capitol building.[43][44][45] She remained live on NBC News throughout the evening.[46] In 2022, she won aNews & Documentary Emmy Award for her reporting on the siege of the U.S. Capitol.[47]

In 2023, herwar reporting earned her an Emmy nomination forOutstanding Emerging Journalist.[48][49]
