Ellen Mirojnick (born 7 July 1949 inNew York City) is an American costume designer.[1] She is a frequent collaborator of actorMichael Douglas, having overseen the costume design for the filmsFatal Attraction (1987),Wall Street (1987),Basic Instinct (1992),A Perfect Murder (1998),Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010) andBehind the Candelabra (2013).[2] The wardrobe which she created for the character ofGordon Gekko inspired afashion trend in the late 1980s and early 1990s for boldly patterned ties, sleek suits, crisp white shirts, and colorful suspenders in men's business wear.[3] She has also been a frequent collaborator of directorsJan de Bont andPaul Verhoeven, acting as costume designer on de Bont's filmsSpeed (1994),Twister (1996) andThe Haunting (1999), as well as Verhoeven's filmsBasic Instinct (1992),Showgirls (1995),Starship Troopers (1997) andHollow Man (2000).[4]
She won an Emmy and aCostume Designers Guild Award in 2013 for her work on theLiberace biopicBehind the Candelabra.[5] In 2016, she was given the Career Achievement Award by theCostume Designers Guild.[6] In 2017, she gained further praise for her work on the biographical musical drama filmThe Greatest Showman starringHugh Jackman, which garnered her a nomination forExcellence in Period Film with the Costume Designers Guild.[7] In 2023, Mirojnick received acclaim for her costume design inChristopher Nolan's epic biographical thriller filmOppenheimer starringCillian Murphy,Emily Blunt, andRobert Downey Jr., for which Mirojnick received nominations for anAcademy Award for Best Costume Design and aBAFTA Award for Best Costume Design.[8]
