Elizabeth Spires (born May 1952Lancaster, Ohio) is an Americanpoet anduniversity professor.
Spires was raised inCircleville, Ohio.[1] She graduated fromVassar College andJohns Hopkins University.[2]
Spires is a professor of English atGoucher College, where she holds a Chair for Distinguished Achievement.[3] Her poems have appeared inThe New Yorker,Poetry,American Poetry Review,The Paris Review and many other literary magazines and anthologies.[2]
She has been the recipient of theAmy Lowell Poetry Travelling Scholarship, aWhiting Award, aGuggenheim Fellowship, the Witter Bynner Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, two Ohioana Book Awards, and the Maryland Author Award from the Maryland Library Association.[2]
