Elias Koteas (/ˈɛliəskəˈteɪəs/;[2]Greek:Ηλίας Κοτέας; born March 11, 1961) is a Canadian actor who has performed in lead and supporting roles in numerous films and television series. He won theCanadian Screen Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the filmArarat (2002).
He is known for playing Alvin "Al" Olinsky in theChicago television series franchise. Among the prominent films in which he has performed areSome Kind of Wonderful (1987),Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990),Crash (1996),Fallen (1998),The Thin Red Line (1998),The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), andShutter Island (2010).
Koteas was born inMontreal,Quebec,Canada, to a father who worked as a mechanic for theCanadian National Railways and amilliner mother.[3] His parents are both ofGreek descent.[4]
Koteas is a graduate of theAmerican Academy of Dramatic Arts inNew York City as well asVanier College inMontreal.[5]
Koteas has played major roles inSome Kind of Wonderful (1987),[6]The Adjuster (1991),[7]Exotica (1994),[8]Crash (1996),[9]Fallen (1998),[10] andThe Thin Red Line (1998),[11] among other films. Koteas is also known for playing the lead role of Thomas Daggett in the American filmThe Prophecy (1995)[12] and for portraying sports-crazedvigilanteCasey Jones in two of the originalTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films.[5][13] In 2010, he played major roles inLet Me In[14] andDefendor, a Canadian superhero film starringWoody Harrelson.[15]
On television, he appeared inseason four ofThe Sopranos as Dominic Palladino and in the season two finale ofHouse as a man who shoots Dr.Gregory House.[16] From 2014 to 2018, Koteas starred on theNBCChicago Fire spin-offChicago P.D. where he played Alvin "Al" Olinsky, a longtime undercover detective in the Intelligence Unit.[17][18][19] He also appeared in all otherChicago franchise series.
