The UE was established in 2002 as an alliance of theGuinean League for Ecological Protection (LIPE), theParty of Renewal and Progress (PRP), theSocial Democratic Party (PSD) and theSocialist Party (PSGB), as well as a dissident faction of theResistance of Guinea-Bissau-Bafatá Movement. It was initially headed byJoaquim Baldé of the PSD,[1] but was designed to have a rotating presidency.[2]

The Union received 4% of the vote in the2004 parliamentary elections, winning two seats.[3] It supportedPAIGC candidateMalam Bacai Sanhá in the2005 presidential elections, which were won byJoão Bernardo Vieira.

Leadership crises prevented the party from contesting elections in2008 and2009, after which it was dissolved.[2]
