TheElde (German pronunciation:[ˈɛldə]ⓘ) is ariver in northernGermany (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and a few km inBrandenburg), a righttributary of theElbe. Its total length is 220 kilometres (140 mi). The Elde originates nearAltenhof, south ofMalchow. It first flows southeast towards the southern end of LakeMüritz, which it enters atVipperow. It flows out of the Müritz at its northern end, nearWaren. It turns west, and flows through a series of small lakes, and along the town of Malchow, until thePlauer See. It flows out of the Plauer See atPlau am See, and continues west and southwest throughLübz,Parchim,Neustadt-Glewe,Grabow andEldena, and flows into the Elbe atDömitz. Near Eldena, theAlte Elde branches off and flows into theLöcknitz (another tributary of the Elbe) nearEldenburg, part ofLenzen (Elbe). For much of its length, 180 kilometres (110 mi), it forms the navigableMüritz-Elde-Wasserstraße, with 17locks.[1] The Elde is murky, due to the fast erosion of the valley around it.
