Egypt first participated at theOlympic Games in1912, and has sent athletes to compete in most editions of theSummer Olympic since then. Along withCambodia,Iraq andLebanon, Egypt boycotted the1956 Summer Olympics in protest of the tripartiteIsraeli,British, andFrench invasion of Egypt in theSuez War. However, theequestrian events for the 1956 Games were held inStockholm,Sweden five months earlier (because of Australian quarantine regulations), and three Egyptian riders competed there. Egypt withdrew from the1976 Summer Olympics after three days of competition to join the broad African boycott in response to the participation ofNew Zealand, which still had sporting links withapartheidSouth Africa. Egypt also participated in theAmerican-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in protest of theSoviet Union'sinvasion ofAfghanistan. Egypt's participation at theWinter Olympic Games was a singlealpine skier in 1984.
Egyptian athletes have won a total of 41 medals, withweightlifting as its top sport.
TheNational Olympic Committee for Egypt is theEgyptian Olympic Committee, and was created in 1910.
