Egbert Jan Bakker (born 12 November 1958)[1] is a Dutch classical scholar specializing in Greek language, literature and linguistics. He currently is a professor of Classics atYale University.
Bakker was born in 1958 inAmsterdam.[2] He obtained his PhD fromLeiden University in 1988.[3] Bakker was a Fellow at theNetherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences for several months in 1992.[2] He lectured atLeiden University,University of Virginia,University of Texas at Austin, and theUniversité de Montréal before starting atYale University in 2004.[2][3]
Bakker became a corresponding member of theRoyal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999.[4]
Bakker is cited in the acknowledgments of the first two novels ofRick Riordan’sPercy Jackson and the Olympians series.
