Edward Scull (February 5, 1818 – July 10, 1900) was an American politician from Pennsylvania who served as aRepublican member of theU.S. House of Representatives forPennsylvania's 17th congressional district from 1887 to 1889 and20th congressional district from 1889 to 1893.
Scull was born inPittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended the common schools in Pittsburgh and preparatory school in Steubenville, Ohio.[1] He studied law and was admitted to theWestmoreland County bar in 1844.[2] He moved toSomerset, Pennsylvania in 1846 and practiced law until 1857. He served asprothonotary and clerk of the court for three years.
He was appointed collector of internal revenue for the Sixteenth district of Pennsylvania by PresidentAbraham Lincoln in 1863.[3] He was removed by PresidentAndrew Johnson in September 1866. He served as a member of thePennsylvania State Senate for the20th district in 1871.[1] He served as a delegate to theRepublican National Conventions in1864,1876, and1884. He was appointed assessor of internal revenue by PresidentUlysses S. Grant in April 1869, and again appointed collector, on March 22, 1873, and served until August 1883, when the district was consolidated with another. He published and edited theSomerset Herald from 1852 to 1887 and worked as president of the First National Bank of Somerset until his death.[2]
Scull was elected as a Republican to theFiftieth,Fifty-first, andFifty-second Congresses. After his time in Congress, he retired to Somerset. He died in Somerset.
