Edmund Hlawka (5 November 1916,Bruck an der Mur,Styria – 19 February 2009) was anAustrianmathematician. He was a leadingnumber theorist. Hlawka did most of his work at theVienna University of Technology. He was also a visiting professor atPrinceton University and theSorbonne. Hlawka died on 19 February 2009 inVienna.[1][2]
Hlawka studied at theUniversity of Vienna from 1934 to 1938, when he gained his doctorate underNikolaus Hofreiter. Among his PhD students wereRainer Burkard, later to become president of the Austrian Society for Operations Research, graph theoristGert Sabidussi,Cole Prize winnerWolfgang M. Schmidt,Walter Knödel who became one of the first Germancomputer science professors, andHermann Maurer, also a computer scientist. Through these and other students, Hlawka has nearly 1500academic descendants.[3] Hlawka was awarded theDecoration for Services to the Republic of Austria in 2007.
