Edgar Miguel Ié (European Portuguese:[ɛðˈɣaɾˈjɛ]; born 1 May 1994) is aBissau-Guinean professionalfootballer who plays primarily as acentral defender but also as aright-back.
After making onesubstitute appearance forBarcelona, he went on to play top-flight football in Portugal, France, Turkey, the Netherlands and Romania.
Ié represented Portugal at youth international level, including theunder-23 team at the2016 Olympics, and earned oneseniorcap in 2017. He switched toGuinea-Bissau in 2021.
Born inBissau,Guinea-Bissau, Ié joinedSporting CP's youth system in 2008, aged 14. In summer 2012, after concluding his development, he moved toFC Barcelona in Spain alongside his teammate and compatriotAgostinho Cá.[3]
InCatalonia, Ié started playing with theB team in theSegunda División. He made his official debut on 8 December 2012, playing ten minutes in a 1–1 home draw againstElche CF.[4]
Ié made his only competitive appearance for Barcelona's main squad on 3 December 2014,coming on forJérémy Mathieu for the last 27 minutes of a 4–0 win atSD Huesca inthe last 32 of theCopa del Rey.[5] On 27 August 2015, he signed a three-year deal atVillarreal CF, being assigned tothe reserves in theSegunda División B.[6] He appeared moderately often ina season which ended with aplay-off berth, being sent off alongsideAnton Shvets on 3 April in a 1–0 away victory overValencia CF Mestalla.[7]
On 26 December 2016, Ié returned toLisbon, signing forC.F. Os Belenenses.[8] He made hisPrimeira Liga debut the following 27 January, playing the full 90 minutes of a 1–0 away defeat ofBoavista FC.[9]
On 5 July 2017, Ié transferred to French clubLille OSC for€3 million, the highest transfer fee Belenenses ever received for a player.[10][11] He scored his only goal inLigue 1 on 28 January 2018, helping the hosts beatRC Strasbourg Alsace 2–1 by heading home acorner kick fromAnwar El Ghazi in injury time.[12]
Ié was loaned toFC Nantes also of the French top division in late January 2019.[13]
On 12 August 2019, Ié signed a three-year contract withTrabzonspor of the TurkishSüper Lig as part of the deal involvingYusuf Yazıcı.[14][15] He was loaned toFeyenoord four days later,[16][17] making hisEredivisie debut on the 18th in a 1–1 home draw againstFC Utrecht.[18]
On 21 December 2021, Ié suffered a right kneeanterior cruciate ligament injury in a 2–1 win atAltay SK, ruling him out for six months and therefore ending hisseason.[19] Days later, he was released.[20]
Having been unemployed for over a year, Ié remained in Turkey's top division, signing an 18-month contract on 23 January 2023 withİstanbul Başakşehir FK.[20] He was an unused substitute on 11 June as his teamlost theTurkish Cup final 2–0 toFenerbahçe SK.[21]
After playing only eight total games, Ié terminated his contract in January 2024.[22] He then moved toFC Dinamo București, 15th in Romania'sLiga I.[23] In May, the press announced that the latter had launched an investigation following accusations that he had sent his twin brother,Edelino, to play for the club instead;[24] Dinamo denied this had ever taken place,[25] and he was released at the end ofthe campaign.[26]
Ié was initially selected byPortugal for the2012 UEFA European Under-19 Championship,[27] but missed the tournament inEstonia due to injury. Eventually, he won 37caps at youth level, including 12 for theunder-21 team. CoachRui Jorge named him in theunder-23 team that reached the quarter-finals of the2016 Olympic tournament in Brazil.[28]
Ié first appeared with the full side on 10 November 2017, replacingPepe for the last 34 minutes of the 3–0friendly win overSaudi Arabia inViseu.[29] In September 2021, however, heswitched his allegiance toGuinea-Bissau,[30] being selected on 5 November for2022 FIFA World Cupqualifiers againstGuinea andSudan.[31] He missed the2021 Africa Cup of Nations through injury.[32]
Ié made his debut for Guinea-Bissau on 14 June 2023, in a 1–0 away defeat ofSão Tomé and Príncipe for the2023 Africa Cup of Nationsqualifying phase.[33][34]
Ié's twin brother,Edelino, is also a footballer. Amidfielder, he too came through the youth teams at Sporting.[35]
