José Edgar Andrade da Costa (born 14 April 1987) is a Portuguese former professionalfootballer who played as aforward orwinger.

He played 284Primeira Liga games and scored 21 goals forNacional andMarítimo, having started his career with a third team fromMadeira,União.

Born inCâmara de Lobos,Madeira, Costa finished his development at localC.F. União. He made his senior debut with the club in 2006, and played threethird-division seasons with it.

Costa joined neighbouringC.D. Nacional in summer 2009, appearing in 14 games in hisfirst season in thePrimeira Liga (nine as asubstitute) and scoring two goals[2][3] as the team finished in seventh position. His debut in the competition came on 12 September 2009, playing 25 minutes in a 2–0 away loss againstRio Ave FC.[4]

On 14 July 2011, Costa scored on his continental debut in thesecond qualifying round of theUEFA Europa League, opening a 1–1 draw away to Iceland'sFimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar.[5] In January 2012 he spent a week on trial atWest Ham United,[6] but nothing came of it.

In summer 2013, Costa was loaned toMoreirense F.C. of theSegunda Liga.[7] He scored in wins atS.L. Benfica B (2–1)[8] andC.D. Feirense (4–0)[9] for theeventual champions.[10]

Marítimo

Costa subsequently returned to the Portuguese top tier withC.S. Marítimo. On 27 November 2015, he wassent off in a 3–1 loss at Nacional in theMadeira derby;[11] in the reverse fixture on 2 April he scored a volley to open a 2–0 win.[12] He was namedcaptain before the start of2016–17,[13] and signed new contracts in November 2016[14] and June 2019.[15]

On 12 January 2020, Costa played his 200th top-flight game in a goalless draw withVitória de Guimarães.[16] Starting from that August,[17] he signed three one-year contract extensions.[18][19]

In January 2023, Costa accused hisagent Miguel Pinho of attempting to bribe him to lose toS.L. Benfica.[20]

Personal life

Costa's younger sister, Érica (born 1995), played in the same position for Marítimo's women's team.[22][23]
