Manchester City

[edit]
Ederson with Manchester City in 2017

On 1 June 2017, Benfica announced that Ederson had joinedPremier League clubManchester City for £35 million (€40 million).[7] At the time, the transfer made him thesecond most expensive goalkeeper of all-time – currently fifth highest –[8][9] afterGianluigi Buffon (£33 million), whose transfer fee, although the second highest ever in pounds sterling, still remained the highest of all time in euros (€52 million in 2001) untilAlisson Becker's (€75 million in 2018) and nowKepa Arrizabalaga's (€80 million in 2018).[10] Ederson's transfer equalledAxel Witsel's as the largest fee a club has ever paid for a Benfica player at the time.[11]

Ederson was immediately inserted asPep Guardiola's first choice goalkeeper, supplantingClaudio Bravo. He made his competitive debut for the club on 12 August 2017 in a 0–2 away win atBrighton & Hove Albion, where he kept a clean sheet.[12] On 9 September againstLiverpool, Ederson suffered a kick to the face bySadio Mané, and was forced to leave the game after eight minutes of treatment.[13] Ederson received eight stitches, and Mané was sent off by refereeJon Moss and banned for the subsequent three matches.[14] Ederson made his next start the following week in theChampions League againstFeyenoord, sporting a piece of protective headgear.[15] Ederson believed that Mané's collision was accidental, and accepted an apology from the Liverpool player.[15]

On 19 August 2018, Ederson became the first Manchester City goalkeeper to provide a Premier League assist, as his goal-kick was converted bySergio Agüero for the opening goal in a 6–1 win overHuddersfield Town.[16][17] In the2019 EFL Cup final, he saved fromJorginho in a penalty shootout win overChelsea after a goalless draw;[18] he was again unbeaten in a 6–0 win overWatford in the2019 FA Cup final as his team won all three major domestic trophies.[19]

Ederson was awarded theGolden Glove for keeping the most clean sheets (16) in the2019–20 Premier League season after a 5–0 home win againstNorwich City.[20] He retained the honour a year later with one game to spare, as Chelsea'sÉdouard Mendy was unable to match his tally.[21] On 1 September 2021, he signed a new contract to last until 2026.[22] He won the Golden Glove for the third consecutive time in2021–22, sharing his tally of 20 with compatriotAlisson Becker ofLiverpool.[23]

On 15 January 2024, Ederson was awarded theFIFA Best Men's Goalkeeper at the FIFA Best Awards 2023 for keeping the most clean sheets (11) in the2022–23 Premier League season, most number of saves (22) in theUEFA Champions League and being part of the City team who won the treble in 2023.[24] Four months later, he was ruled out of the last game of the Premier League season and the2024 FA Cup final after suffering a fractured eye socket in a collision withCristian Romero in a win overTottenham Hotspur.[25]

Ederson made a total of 372 appearances across all competitions during his eight-year stay at the club, winning 18 major honours, threePremier League Golden Glove awards, and keeping 122 clean sheets in 276 league appearances, a record for a City goalkeeper.[26]

Ederson was named inBrazil's provisional squad forCopa América Centenario[30] but was cut from the final squad due to injury.[31] His debut for the national team came in a 3–0 win overChile in a2018 World Cup qualifier on 10 October 2017.[32] In May 2018, he was named inTite's final23-man squad for theWorld Cup in Russia.[33] Ederson was included in Brazil's 23-man squad for the2019 Copa América.[34]

In June 2021, he made his major tournament debut for Brazil, starting and keeping a clean sheet in a 4–0 group stage victory overPeru at the2021 Copa América as Tite made five changes.[35] In the quarter-finals against Chile, he was chosen at the expense ofAlisson Becker,[36] winning that match 1–0 as well as the semi-finals against Peru.[37] On 10 July, he started in his nation's 1–0 defeat to rivalsArgentina in thefinal.[38]

Ederson was named in the squad for the2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.[39] He played one game for the quarter-finalists, a 1–0 loss toCameroon in the final group game once his team had already advanced to the last 16.[40] He was initially called up byDorival Júnior for the2024 Copa América, but was replaced before the tournament byRafael after being unable to recover from a fractured eye socket.[41]

Style of play

[edit]

Ederson has been described as an agile, commanding, and physically imposing keeper,[42][43][44][45] who possesses both physical strength and good reflexes[43][46][47] and shot-stopping abilities between the posts.[42][46] However, he is mostly highly regarded for his distribution and skill with the ball at his feet than for his abilities as shot-stopper:[48] his control and confidence on the ball enables him to retain possession and quickly play the ball out from the back on the ground with his hands or either foot – even when put under pressure – or launch an attack with long kicks.[42][43][46][49][50][51][52][53][54][55] Although naturally left-footed,[45] he is capable of using either foot.[56] Regarding his distribution, former Manchester City goalkeeperShay Given described Ederson as "the best goalkeeper in the world with his feet" in 2018;[57] his range of passing has also led to him be described as aplaymaker in the media.[58][59]

Ederson is also very quick when rushing off his line,[52] and often functions as asweeper-keeper.[60] Regarded as a highly promising prospect in his formative years,[46] he stood out for his decision making, consistency, and composure in goal, as well as his ability to organise his defence, and has also become an intelligent reader of the game;[42][43][46][50] in 2019,Kasper Schmeichel described him as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.[61]

Personal life

[edit]

Ederson acquired Portuguese citizenship in 2016.[62] His body is heavily covered in tattoos, including a rose and a skull on his neck, angel wings on his back, a Portuguese League trophy on his leg, which he won for Benfica in 2016 and in 2017, and even a tattoo of 'I Belong to Jesus' which conveys his Christian faith.[63]
