In thisPortuguese name, the second or paternal family name isSouza. "Neto" is agenerational suffix meaning "grandson", which is used for someone whose name is the same as their father and grandfather, like "III" in English.

Edward Souza-Neto (September 22, 1921 – May 19, 1979) was an Americansoccer player who earned at least 7caps and scored 3 goals for theUnited States men's national soccer team,[1] and played in the U.S. team's historic1–0 victory overEngland in the1950 FIFA World Cup. Souza was also a member of the U.S. team for the1948 Summer Olympics.[2] He played his club soccer withFall River Ponta Delgada and New York German-Hungarian SC.

In 1976, he was inducted into theNational Soccer Hall of Fame.[3]

Souza was not related to his teammateJohn Souza.[4]
